Appendix I: Glossary

correspondences - specific attributes associated with direction or color, such as west/blue (health and healing).

disorder - a disease of substance abuse, behavior, or mental illness

elementals - spirits who are connected to one of the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

fuel - substances and/or behaviors that we used to feed our disorder

Green Man - in the history of Paganism and Witchcraft, an individual assigned to guard and protect secret rituals, and the coven or pagan group in general, from persecution.

morning after - a period of remorse, guilt and pain following the unrestrained gratification of our Disorder.

Myth of Sameness - the common belief in 12-step programs that anyone with a substance or behavior abuse problem can successfully recover and drive their disease into remission, if they work the program, as spelled out, and are absolutely honest about it. This is a myth because some substance addiction recoverees have dual disorders, such as mental illness, that, without treatment, may interfere or prevent the substance recovery process.

pagan aware - individuals who may not subscribe entirely to pagan beliefs, but are aware of the true nature of paganism and are comfortable with it, and may relate to it in part.

recoveree - any person recovering from substance abuse, behavioral, emotional, and mental problems, who may or may not already be a member of an existing 12-step group.

recovery-through-faith - a personal recovery program that defines a Higher Power through an existing religion.

secular - non-religious, but does not exclude spirituality

spiritual supplement - any religious or recovery program that fills in the spiritual gaps in the dominant 12-step recovery programs; i.e., addresses non-Christian religions.

taboo - something society forbids.

willful ignorance - consciously and deliberately rejecting valid information because it challenges one's established beliefs, and intrudes on one's illusions of comfort.

Appendix II: ADL's Hate Crime Law

Quoted with permission from the Anti-Defamation League's website:

The core of the ADL legal approach is a "penalty-enhancement"
concept. In a landmark decision issued in June 1993, the United States
Supreme Court unanimously upheld the constitutionality of Wisconsin's
penalty-enhancement hate crimes statute, which was based on the ADL
model. Expressions of hate protected by the First Amendment's free
speech clause are not criminalized. However, criminal activity motivated
by hate is subject to a stiffer sentence. A defendant's sentence may be
enhanced if he intentionally selects his victim based upon his perception
of the victim's race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or
gender.

(Items 2, 3 and four have particular relevance to Pagans.)
